Default Legality of creating tools for TS3
Good evening,

I am trying to find a more definitive answer to a project idea I have in mind.

In short I would like to create a tool in a separate programming language (LUA) that works alongside The Sims 3 to allow players to track a fictional town (that I was create in CAW). The tool would let players track the towns money, resources, policies etc and then ingame I would try and make some simple mods to compliment it to add to the realism. In the tool if I don't use any of TS3's assets is it legal to make such a program, to solely create a new gameplay style for the Sims? The tool of course would be released for free and I know mods themselves are fine hence the site hah.

Just don't want a cease and desist from EA anytime soon! :D

Hope that makes sense,

Thanks,

Nyt.

I created Sims Machinima videos with Sims 3.

As I understand it and obviously this is a personal opinion, EA is pretty laidback when it comes to mods and tools that support modding. I have been playing The Sims franchise since The Sims game first was launched and never once heard of EA going after modders over trademark issues (or over anything in fact).

The standard way to go seems to be, to add these lines to your mods / tools:

"This site/mod is not endorsed with or affiliated by Electronic Arts, or its licensors.
Trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
Game content and materials copyright Electronic Arts Inc. and its licensors.
All rights reserved.
Maxis, Electronic Arts, EA Games, The Sims 3 are registered trademarks and (copyright symbol here) Electronic Arts Inc."

This should clear up that you are not intending to misrepresent your affiliation with EA and that you are not intending to dispute EA-related trademarks with your work. Again, this is a personal opinion on a forum, not a legal advice - but that's what I've seen others do.

A similar project that involves developing tools and utilities for players and modders of The Sims 3, would be "S3 Tools" a suite of multiple tools, including the infamous S3PE and s3oc. You can check it out here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/sims3tools/
