Ok, I AM confused (hair, meshes, alpha channels and textures?)
Heya I'm currently working on my first mesh project that I'm actually going to finish haha.
Well well... So I started creating this hair mesh and all... And maybe I shouldn't read all kinda tutorials while doing this, because now I'm pretty confused.
I'm using the newest milkshape, plugins, but an older version of simpe.
So my hair has got about ~6 layers. I cloned it from the simplelonghair maxis mesh...(which only has 2 alphas!!!)
well, my problem is, I read that you can't create some more alphas, but I think I need some more because I simply need more textures for all the layers. What's up with that? Am I not getting anything here?
Because, if I have everything in just 2 groups (1 for the front, 1 for the back faces) how can I texture the gaps & overlays properly? And even if that worked, there's just not enough space on the texture map....
Secondly, what about the alpha opacity rules? I know that they need to be sorted from inner layers to the top layers... But I don't get how they are named... there's alpha3, then 5... etc.... why aren't there alpha 1, 2,4,6 etc?
Thank you guys,
-Julia

Yes you can create more "alpha" layers.
I have done it and it does work.
I use the method explained in this thread by Sunair:
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=75793
As for the naming, that's just the way Maxis did it - and if you look at several different Maxis meshs you will find they didn't always do it the same way.
For example, some meshes skip 3 and go right to 5, 7, 9, etc.
What they did do is to name the groups the same as their opacity setting, for example hair_alpha5 will have an opacity setting of 5.
This isn't strictly necessary, but it will help to avoid un-necessary confusion so I would follow their method at least that much.
There is no restriction on the numbers, having a "hair_alpha1" is perfectly OK.

Cloud, really you should have asked this in... requests... but just for the record, meshes can go whatever way people want.... look at 'downloads/bodyshop/hair/male' for instance....
