This user has the following games installed:

Sims 2, University, Nightlife, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage, Free Time, Apartment Life
Default The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection on Windows 10
People in multiple places have been reporting The Sims 2 works just fine on Windows 10, with no issues at all and with better performance than 8/8.1

It may not be a critical issue at all, but it's quite annoying to me, the game used to run smoothly on Windows 8.1, just as good if not better than it would on Windows XP/7, but as i upgraded to Windows 10 the game disabled the "smooth edges" slider and refuses to set the resolution to anything other than 800x600.

I'd like to know if someone else had this same issue with TS2 on Windows 10, or if there's a fix.

The only thing i did on Windows 8.1 was change the settings for Sims2EP9.exe from "integrated graphics" to "high performance" on Nvidia Control Panel. This alone fixed ALL the problems for me.

This *partially* works on Windows 10 too, except it doesn't fix the issue with the stuck 800x600 resolution or the deactivated "smooth edges" slider :/ (it still fixes the issue with the low-res textures though)

BTW, thanks for helping :D

the available resolution options can be changed in the Graphics Rules files (somewhere in the Program Files directory). can be changed with Notepad/WordPad. the lines to change have "maxResWidth" and "maxResHeight".

Or if the higher resolution options are already available in game, might check if a compatibility mode is available; right-click on the desktop shortcut then select "Properties".

Maybe this thread will help.

Sims 2 and Graphics Cards - the fixes

And go to the bottom of the first post and download:

GraphicRules-NVidia-TextureFix.rar

Then put it in your folders:
\Program Files (x86)\EA\The Sims 2 Mansion & Garden Stuff\TSData\Res\Config\
\Program Files (x86)\EA\The Sims 2 Mansion & Garden Stuff\TSData\Res\CSConfig\

That will fix the problem.

Would the stuck resolution be a problem if you play in windowed mode anyway?

Anyway, both TS2 and TS3 worked fine out of the box on 8.1 once I got the graphics drivers that 8 messed up fixed. My disc versions of TS2 were pretty tricky but UC works out of the box.... er, 24-hour download. (Rural internet speeds suck.)

I got windows 10 on my desktop but haven't gotten around to testing stuff and likely never will, since I'm content with 8.1 for now. Sorry.

Not everyone wants to mess with Graphic Rules or any game config file.

In Windows 8 the game works pretty much out of box, runs perfectly even if you didn't touch the graphic rules file. All you need to do is force the highest settings on Sims 2 via the video card's control panel (which normally defaults to integrated graphics AKA that crappy thing that makes all textures look horrible, just change it to your card's best settings). Pretty straight forward. No need to edit Graphic Rules.sgr at all.

I think the same could do for Windows 10, but it's still too new, maybe it's a issue with the nvidia drivers not working properly on the new OS yet, let's hope they get fixed soon, if that's the case.

Some players can play with out messing with the SGR but for the ones who have newer video card that only give them 800x600 and no smooth edges then they will have to mess with the SGR to get a better looking game.

My video card is actually brand new, and worked just fine with The Sims 2, at least on Windows 8.1. All i did was change the configuration for Sims2EP9.exe so it won't use the integrated graphics card with NVIDIA Control Panel.

It worked for everything on Windows 10 too (shadows, textures, reflections, water all looked fine) *except* for the 800x600 resolution and smooth edges, which is weird because i did the exact same thing in Windows 8.1 and it worked like a charm, with smooth edges and all.

Turns out Windows 10 is rubbish and messes with a few things that were fine on 8.1, so it's better to revert for now and wait for it to mature a bit, as i don't need any of the new features or the new start menu.

EDIT: Windows 8.1 "downgrade" just solved the issue. Smooth Edges and max resolution are available again, so it's definitively a Windows 10 quirk with my graphics card.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but i need to know something in case i ever use The Sims 2 on Windows 10 again.

I also noticed windowed mode didn't work on Windows 10, but it worked again as i switched back to Windows 8.1 (yes, the issue with disabled smooth edges and 800x600 resolution was Windows 10's fault apparently, as Windows 8.1 didn't require any changes to Graphics Rules.sgr)

Was there a way to fix the windowed mode issue without downgrading?

Anyway, i don't want to come back to Windows 10 right now. Contrary to what people have been saying, it doesn't run The Sims 2 any faster than Windows 8.1 did. It just created unnecessary problems (nothing game breaking though). I'm glad the downgrade was just enough to fix all issues.

I recently managed to get Windows 10 for laptop and at first The Sims 2 and all the expansion played fine. I went to play it today and now it doesn't even get past the first sentence on the loading screen without crashing.
I don't have the Ultimate Collection but I do have all the Sims 2 games on disk. I never bothered to get Windows 8 because I didn't like it, so I went from Windows 7 straight to 10.
i don't think it's a graphics problem seeing as I can't even get the game to load, so if someone could offer some advice I would very much appreciate it.

The first thing to remember is that for some reason in 10 the cache files get corrupted easier than other OP so try and delete the cache files and see what happens.

i managed to get sims 2 ultimate collection in 1080p windowed mode.

first, use the graphics rule maker to get the graphicsrule to work for your video card and go in game to choose your preferred settings.

second, rightclick the "Sims2EP9" file found in the program files directory and use the compatibility troubleshooter to run it in windows 8 mode.

and finally, rightclick your shortcut and put the directory in the target box in quotes and add -w to the end.

ex: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection\Fun with Pets\SP9\TSBin\Sims2EP9.exe" -w

Nope wasn't that. I tried loading it with and without the launcher after deleting them and it was still the same.
What happens is that it loads very quickly, much too quickly to what I'm used to, and then instead of going through the EA games logo and the opening credits it goes straight to the loading screen. Sometimes it'll go to about the 3rd sentence before crashing, others it will just crash without even attempting to show the words.
It worked fine when I first changed over to Windows 10, that was the first thing I checked but it just won't work now.
I'm thinking of uninstalling it but I'm hoping to avoid that. I have all the games on disk so it would take me the whole day to get everything back to the way I had it before.

Just uninstaled the game and put in the first game to try that but it still crashed. Same problem as before, it won't show the EA sponsor and opening credits and then it'll crash as soon as the 4th sentence loads.

Thank you, @Marka - the advice on Leefish's site solved my problems (I had the game stuck in one resolution too) - everything works very well now, and I am quite happy with Windows 10 at the moment.

That looks to me as if it may be the wrong shortcut. You need to make one from the Fun with Pets Collection. Instructions are here: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=529574
@Pumpkin Panic

As for Nvidia and the graphics - that Nvidia texture fix that Mark recommends is the only thing I needed to fix my resolution problem. I did not have to anything else.

I have used the UC since it was released on Windows 7 and then on Windows 10 since 10 became available. There are some steps that have to be taken, and your particular system may need more or less than another player's.

Run the game as administrator.
Left click the shortcut and troubleshoot compatiblitly - for me, it works best compatible with Windows 8 (even though I never had Windows 8).
Get the relevant graphic fixes you need - the program, for some reason, does not work on my system, the Nvidia texture fix does.
