|5th Feb 2018, 11:33 PM||Things to Remember ... because my memory is shot #1|
Soooo - I decided to deal with the Win10 problem and TS2 by dual booting the PC. I bought an SSD, installed it, installed Win7 and have got as far as having installed the entire game (nice new installation). I'm starting to transfer stuff over but I've fiddled with so much of the game and its files and folders over the years that I am pretty sure I'm not going to remember everything. So I thought I'd make a list and appeal for help and ideas. If you were transferring your game to a new system, what do you need to remember?
And by way of encouragement, you'll be helping Jo too who is currently having a new machine built (I think) so she'll be going through this process too. List in next post - I thought I'd update it as a sort of resource.
|5th Feb 2018, 11:33 PM||List of Stuff to Do #2|
This is a disk installation (not UC). Some things will be relevant to UC but not everything.
So this is what I have so far:
Installing and Securom
When installing, you can install up to Seasons safely and avoid Securom. The procedure I did was install those EPs and patch as I went along. I then ran the game between each installation to check all was going well. I then installed all the rest without running the game and also installed the SPs. This stops Securom initiating. I then did a fiddle with the exe that I'm not allowed to discuss here but you can read about it over at Leefish. It doesn't matter though if you did run the game having installed BV or later because the thread at Leefish also mentions a tool for removing Securom. This is particularly an issue for Win10 users since Securom doesn't play nice with the operating system. UC users can ignore it because EAxis patched it out in an update. http://leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=6688 (thanks for reminder Gdayars)
Sims 2 patches are here: http://modthesims.info/wiki.php?tit...elp:TS2_Patches
Homecrafter if you want it (and all the crappy EAxis downloadable stuff too) is here: http://modthesims.info/wiki.php?tit...al_Site_Archive - right at the top. It's easy to miss.
If you have trouble installing, you may find this helpful https://www.wikihow.com/Install-the-Sims-2 (yavannatw) though that is not strictly accurate in saying you have to install in order - you don't - though I believe it has helped some people if they run into problems. I installed the EPs in order but dumped the SPs in a block. It's all good.
Bypass the launcher - because TS2 support from EAxis is long since gone, running from the launcher can be a PITA or even downright unprofitable. A bypass is needed, this helps: http://modthesims.info/wiki.php?tit...assing_Launcher (vllygrl). Though my preferred method is to find the exe I'm going to run the game from (right-click on the shortcut on your desktop and choose 'Open file location' - it will be right there) and then right-click on the exe and chose 'send to desktop.' It will make you a nice new short cut (which you can rename btw). Delete the original shortcuts - you don't need them. Done
Extra: although this list is not about the UC, if you want the Christmas outfits which are apparently missing in the UC, have a look here: http://moonkistsims.tumblr.com/post...-happy-holidays (simsample)
Update the exe with both the 4GB patch/CFF Explorer (http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Sims_3:CFF_Explorer) and do the Data Execution Prevention modification (http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title...revention/TS3W). Discussed initially here in relation to TS3 (works just fine for TS2) and helps with memory management and to prevent crashing: http://digitalperversion.net/garden...p?topic=21931.0. If necessary you can also limit the number of cores the game uses. This sometimes helps it to run more smoothly. If you're not happy with CFF Explorer (and it can be a bit daunting) there's a patcher available but I don't currently have the url - looking for that now
For my installation, I've avoided this step because I still have the game installed in Win10 as well as Win7 so I just transferred my already treated exe. So bascially - done
Deal with the virtual memory - useful instructions from Gdayars at post 37 - to do
Install Scriptorium http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=192613 - done
Install http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=92541 - done
Fiddle with lighting files (I was thinking of the new non-blue version of Gunmod (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=606842) though Jo favours SpookyMuffin https://app.box.com/s/c52ujti29g) - actually holding on this for now as there seems to be a slight issue with the non-blue version. Just Gunmod for now - done
Install AGS http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=250555 - done This is the version for the disks version of the game, if you have the UC it's http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=604873
Install empty templates (I guess I will get Jawusa's this time. This is necessary I think as I tested one custom neighbourhood and the game promptly dumped a whole pile of sim files in the characters folder. http://modthesims.info/t/544800 - done
Install Anti-SDH hacks (BO - No Sim Loaded, CJ-SmarterEPCheck, Dolphin26_ControlThisSim, LBFRemovesocial) Strictly you don't need No Sim Loaded AND ControlThisSim - done
Install necessary safety hacks (in addition to the anti-SDH hacks) nounlinkondelete, creaturefixes - done
Change all pre-load videos to .old - (C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\The Sims BG & All EPs\TSData\Res\Movies - do them all, it's the only way to be sure) - done
Find any catalogue re-sorts I have (put in correct place) Folder location for necessary files (in my game) - Objects: C\:Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden Stuff\TSData\Res\CatalogBins and Skins C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Mansion and Garden Stuff\TSData\Res\CatalogSkins- done
Chase down adjustments and additions (such as default added sub-sets and so on). Files go here (in my game): C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\Catalog\zCEP-EXTRA - done
Make that stairs and bins adjustment to the neighbourhood lot imposters LOD textures http://criquette-was-here.tumblr.co...-and-your-hoods finally found it - done
Find stuff I'd installed with Scriptorium - this is relatively easy for me to do since I can just use Scriptorium's shortcut links to find the files in the original folders and then, after moving to the new set of folders, use the shortcuts again to find where to put them. Having said that, as long as you find the files before you uninstall the old version of the game using the shortcuts, you can then find the new place to put them with the new install using Scriptorium's shortcuts once you've reinstalled it. - done
userStartup.cheat file - done (though poss needs updating for the new Gunmod non-blue, to check)
Camera settings (files into folder - y'know, I thought Gunmod added something to that) - done - thank heavens for that
Reinstall my custom TV channels and change broadcast.ini - to do
Make objects.package read only - done
Install anti-mosaic mod - I use quaxi_pets_censor_v1 from the site I think - done
Graphics Rules http://www.leefish.nl/mybb/showthread.php?tid=5446 - done
You may want to alter the resolutions available in game also. There's a guide here: https://simsvip.com/2014/07/20/the-...solution-guide/ though you can also do that using the graphicrules programme. If altering the version of graphicrules in Config doesn't stick, try copying the file or changes over to the version in CSConfig too. - done
Nopke's black box fix - done
Go through all the files in Documents\EA Games\The Sims 2 because I fiddled with those to hell and back - done but not installed yet. I'll make a list in a bit
Install the Sims 2 Loading Randomiser because that thing is awesome. http://greatcheesecakepersona.tumbl...ingrandomizer-2 - done
I'm generally not including stuff in Downloads (except danger prevention hacks) and utilities here since they will get transferred over with the game save files and my sims store folder. But I will say - (already sent over to Win7, I use 73.44 (though might transfer over to Quaxi's new version shortly) but don't forget DDS Utilities if you're a creator (Aysarth) https://developer.nvidia.com/gamewo...-utilities-8-31 - done
You might like to install Sim City 4 if you have it (Aysarth) though you may want to check out post 17 and short conversation at post 29-32 if you're concerned about Securom (ihatemandatoryregister).

Subbing to this since my new rig is nearly complete. *prays that he managed to get win 7*

A few general advice things.
Up your virtual memory to some ungodly number.
use 4 gb patch
I personally change the operating system to work better with programs.
do the graphics rules (graphics rules maker at leefish. awesome!)
I always copy and paste my stuff from time to time so I don't have to go and chase down all the extras some place, so I can just plop them into a new install.
(if on UC) fix the holidays skins
|6th Feb 2018, 2:50 AM||#5|
I recently did fresh install cause I couldn't find flashing thing - To your list I also added
Moo's - Multiple subhoods, lotAdjuster, pack installer, Hood checker
Simwardrobe HCDU/SimPE (Still got that to do) Delphy Download organiser
Carried over favourite Collection file, paintings, movies, music
Body Templates, townified eyes
4g Patch,Graphics Rules, Securerom remover (mine wouldn't work)
Then come the fixes
Little fixes (Inges Booth fixes, tunafish attraction fixes, etc)
Place neighbourhood deco anywhere
Darcy (or others) extra slots - Fixes to add AL go up and down with walls, fixes to put things in chiller cabinet, Modularstair fix
Boiling oil - No sim loaded (fixes superhuggy bug thing)
Then gameplay enhancements, sleep on anylot, don't shoot food, community skilling, fitness4All (maty)
Then I put in any mods that change time (Cboy) or ages - Also Hats for townies, glasses for townies, body diversity - not necessary if your making your own townies.
I'm now on the fun part of choosing furniture of clothes and dumping anything low quality or old. (only clothes with preg morphs)
I'm running on UC on Win 8. Hope that helps

Charity just posted about custom TV channels. She had to put files in there, maybe you have custom TV channels?
|6th Feb 2018, 3:01 AM||#7|
Most of that is in my download folder/sims 2 folder so don't need to think of those, they come with the backup-or I certainly hope they all will.
Right now I am transferring all my stored downloads on my D drive desktop (those not in my game) to my portable hard drive. Looks like just that will take about 3/4 of an hour.
If I also save all my C drive desktop that should have all those other things like simpe. patches, hood checker and stuff I hope. I better check that.

What's SDH stand for (anti-SDH hacks)?
|6th Feb 2018, 4:17 AM||#11|
super duper hug?
|6th Feb 2018, 4:22 AM||#12|
Although since I also have an SSD and plan to try imagining it all across (no reinstalling ya all!) it might also take across the SDH-not sure. Worse things than that, that I am worried about, like unexplained crashing.
Edit: Just found out I have Windows 7 *happy dance*

You mean, for your new computer?? Yay!!! Oh this is great news.

Thank you for sharing this! Didn't know it existed.
ETA: Although I'm running into a bit of an issue with it, so I posted a question in the feedback section of the upload. Linking to it in case anyone here knows what the issue is as well.

Don't forget NVidia DDS utilities for Simpe, the Compressoriser, Nopke's Sky Fix for if you want to see the stars.
Also, SC4 runs on Win 7!
|6th Feb 2018, 9:15 PM||#16|
Okay, my tech guy does not recommend imaging across. :/ Does anyone know about this? I forget why now of course so will have to ask hubby when he is home.
I have Utilities from my desktop (doing the rest of C drive desktop today) and the compressoriser. I assume sky fix is in my download folder. SC4 I grabbed but I think I would need to reinstall that from Origin.
@Rosebine yes! It's on my new computer and he has finished it. I am concerned what happens in a year when they stop support (also why they stop support already?!) Huh think they can push us around, push us to Windows 10.
|6th Feb 2018, 9:17 PM||#17|
Well, different hardware and such - needs different configurations and drivers and such.
If you have a disc version of SimCity 4, one of the Windows Updates on 7 renders SecuROM and SafeDisc inoperable and thus the game won't launch. Since you mentioned Origin, you won't need this, but I figure I might as well mention the workarounds here.
First is a NoCD patch, though you won't be able to install the Network Addon Mod if you go this route. Alternatively, you can just buy the game when it's on sale on GOG.
Second option is to not install the specific update, MS15-097.
Third option is what I use. I set up a batch file to enable SecuROM before launching the game and then close it down after I'm done.
Obviously, replace the path there with your actual installation path. The CPUCount bit just makes it limit the game to 1 processor core (the game doesn't handle multithreading well) and -w makes it run in a window.
|6th Feb 2018, 9:38 PM||#18|
Shh ihate we can't talk about that on MTS, site rules. As far as I know those rules haven't changed.
I don't have the old version of sucyrom but I would have the newer version from SC4 and Sims 4. I never tried removing it.
|6th Feb 2018, 9:41 PM||#19|
I was planning to say no more about it
|7th Feb 2018, 1:27 AM||#20|
Yes, I thought about this last night when I went to bed. In my case, it's solved by the simple expedient of finding the exe for the Win 10 game and copying it across because I already applied the 4GB patch and fiddled with the cores. That's kind of an advantage of doing a dual boot - I can hang on to the Win10 game till I'm ready to uninstall.
I'm going to come back to this thread and summarise people's helpful tips in my list. I was going to add appropriate links - so if you have them peeps, add them to your comments. Having said that Tuesdays and Wednesdays are long work days for me and I often don't come on here till late and I'm pretty tired so I'll probably get back to things a little later in the week. I haven't run off and abandoned the thread though so keep adding stuff. It will be a great help 'cos I'm sure I've forgotten something.
I'll come back to the virtual memory thing since I always seem to get that wrong - managed it once (and once was enough) but no idea what I did.

I'll add that one - I already did that for myself - no*cough* *cough*.exe. Didn't want to mention it out loud. (Also used it to avoid Securom)
Yes, I did - I'll have to look it up
Just reinstall it Jo (nice fresh SDH-free installation remember) - honestly it went as fast as the disk drive installing. Took me about 2 hours tops. SSDs are amazing apparently - the game loaded in 22 seconds - I'M NOT KIDDING. I timed it. No CC yet but it went past so fast I nearly missed it.
|7th Feb 2018, 2:22 AM||#23|
Ahah! Yep! A nice machine helps with loading time. Mine takes a bit less than one minute to load, with all the CC I have.
|7th Feb 2018, 2:59 AM||#24|
True maxon. I do at least have all the patches downloaded and saved.
Wow 22 seconds, 20 gigs again here I come again. I've tried not to go past 12 on my current set up since it's half an hour from start to a house being fully loaded. I will be happy even with 5 minutes.
|7th Feb 2018, 8:59 PM||#25|
I've always had fairly short loading times compared to some on here but this was 'wooosh ... yeah, I'm ready, now what?'
I'm so tired tonight - can't think straight. All I've been doing is talking to students all day. I think it must be all the dim things they say to me.
