Default Dystopia Challenge
Required: University Life
Suggested: Generations, World Adventures

For the last few decades the city has been oppressed by a corrupt government. The flow of information is tightly controlled. You are a member of the rebellion, in charge of information distribution. From strategically placed street art to secret radio broadcasts, you have dedicated yourself to keeping the masses informed. It’s a dangerous job, what with the police constantly on the lookout for acts of rebellion, but it’ll all be worth it when the people rise up and reclaim their freedom.

SETUP

Create one Sim. Male or female; teen, young adult, adult; doesn’t matter. This is your freedom fighter. Pick traits that would be considered advantageous to a freedom fighting Sim whose main job is communication. Things like brave, athletic, charismatic, or friendly. Personally, I think Avant Garde is an excellent trait for this challenge.

Your Sim may be an occult. Life span is whatever you feel like.

Pick any neighborhood and select an empty lot of your choice. Build a small enclosure with the cheapest available bed and a toilet. This is a containment unit for if your Sim is ever arrested. You may not enter this enclosure unless your Sim has been detained by the police.

Next, purchase a sleeping bag or a tent. If you don’t have an expansion that comes with sleeping bags or tents then place a few beds around the neighborhood. Resorts are perfectly acceptable accommodation. If you have Seasons, feel free to build igloos in winter.

If you don’t have it already, purchase a street art kit. Then reduce your funds to 500.

OBJECTIVE

Overthrow the corrupt government. This is done by:
-reaching max influence with the rebels
-having 10 successful protests, 5 of which must be 3 stars. The last protest must take place outside City Hall.
-maxing the street art skill
-2 weeks of consistent radio broadcast OR having a 5 star blog (pick an hour time slot, broadcast within this time slot.)
-Creating 3 contacts within the city (best friend/old friend status)

Things you can do to accomplish these goals:
-street art
-use megaphone
-broadcasting world news on the radio
-creating a blog
-holding protests
-talking to other rebels/doing other rebellious activities
-making friends

RULES AND RESTRICTIONS

Your Sim cannot have a job, full or part time. Having a job means the government has an official file on you, which is rather detrimental to your cause. Make money through hobbies such as music, gardening, bar tending, gambling (if you have the casino), or fishing.

Avoid major areas like City Hall, the spa, the bistro, the corporate building, and especially the police station and military base. Places like that are great for getting caught on government surveillance. I leave this a bit up to your discretion. If you think a lot would be under heavy surveillance, do not go there. The exception is hosting your 10th protest at City Hall. The gym is exempt from this rule.

Every time you do something illegal, you must roll a dice.
-rebel influence of 0 or 1: 1-3 no police show up; 4-6 police show up.
-rebel influence of 2 or 3: 1-4 no police show up; 5 and 6 police show up.
-rebel influence of 4-6: 1-5 no police show up; 6 police show up.
-rebel influence of 7 or above: no dice roll. You're so good at this by now the police never know you were there until you're long gone.
The idea is that as you gain more rebel influence you get better at staying under the radar and avoiding police. If you are caught by the police you are either detained or must lie low for 12 hours, depending on athletic skill.
This rule applies to: megaphone, meeting contacts, protests. If you are caught by police during a protest, the protest cannot be successful (no matter what the game says).
When creating street art on a public lot there is a chance of getting caught and scolded by the police. Same rules apply as every other time you get caught doing illegal activities.

Street art may only be done after 6PM. By then the light is starting to fade, which means less chance of being spotted leaving your covert message on a lot.

If you are caught tagging by the police or performing any other illegal activity you are arrested and detained for 12 hours. During this time, you may not leave your home lot. To that end, it’s not a bad idea to make sure you carry something around in your inventory to snack on because the police ain’t feeding you anything. If you’re athletic skill is level 5 or higher, you escape from the police and avoid detainment. Find a safe place to hunker down for 12 hours while the police search for you. While you are not confined to the lot, you shouldn’t stray far. Do not wander more than one lot away from your chosen hiding place. During this time, it would be best to avoid committing any illegal activities. Radio broadcasts and blog posts are okay, as you can do these from the safety of your hideout.

Don’t stay more than 2 nights in one place. With the government trying to crush the rebellion before it gets too big, staying in one place for too long is like painting a giant bullseye on your back. On night three, police raid your current hideout and you are detained for 12 hours. Athletic skill of 5 or higher means you can escape, but must lie low.

When you make a friend, they become one of your contacts in the city. Make sure you keep in regular touch to gather information for your broadcasts/blog posts. Every 3 days should do it. Just a short chat on the phone will do and remember to be careful about meeting in person too often. When someone is best friend status, they have been completely vetted by the underground and you are no longer required to roll when meeting them.

You may not throw parties, but you may attend them. A little bit of undercover work never hurt anyone. If you are attending one hosted by one of your contacts it is considered a meeting with the contact and you must roll to see if you are caught by the police.

There are no restrictions on romance or children. If you want to get married and have kids while fighting oppression, that’s your personal choice. Just remember that looking after a child while on the run won’t be easy and hiring a nanny isn’t an option. Letting a stranger that close to your family could be the end of your cause.

You must hand out at least 1 flyer before the beginning of a protest. If you don’t hand out any flyers, how will people know to come?

You are free to purchase any lifetime reward you want, save for the rebel social influence.

Mods are allowed, but you may not use cheats.

Optional/more difficult rules:
-change the 12 hour detainment/laying low rule to 24 hours
-15 successful protests (or 20, or 30.)
-2 weeks of consistent radio broadcast AND a 5 star blog
-5 contacts within the city
-must also complete lifetime wish
-if you are caught twice by police while meeting the same contact then you must dump that contact and find a new one
-when calling a contact, roll to see if your call is traced back to you.
-you may not use skill books to increase your street art skill
-purchase street art kit after challenge start instead of before
-rebel influence of 0-2: 1-3 no police show up; 4-6 police show up.
-rebel influence of 3-6: 1-4 no police show up; 5 and 6 police show up.
-rebel influence of 7-9: 1-5 no police show up; 6 police show up.
-rebel influence max: no dice roll. You're so good at this by now the police never know you were there until you're long gone.

I think that covers everything. If I forgot something or if anything is unclear don’t hesitate to say something. Feel free to tweak the rules for more difficulty beyond what's suggested above.

Man, I really wished I had University! You did a great job and if I get the UL expansion, I'm totally doing this first ^_^

Thanks! This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the radio station in UL and the idea wouldn't leave me. Figured I may as well make a challenge out of it.

This is really good. I'm already doing a Random Legacy, a Nothing is Free Challenge and now the Mother Russia Challenge. As soon as I finish one of those, I will give this a shot. I'm going to tell my kids about it. Bet my son will want to do it.

This was quite fun really, especially as I hadn't done much in-game with the street art skill or with protests before. Not difficult once my sim had enough Athletic skill to outrun the police, but interesting.

Wow this looks fantastic, I just wish that it didn't need UL.
I might have to look into a couple swap-tions to make it work base game... I'm thinking writing career switching for the radio/blog (manifestos and pamphleteering). What I can't figure out is the street art... (and obviously the lacking of the Rebel Group/Protests. Those would probably just have to be outside of game functions though).

Nice. May I link to this challenge for a segment of my own legacy challenge?
