I believe it's the 'cheer up' interaction.

I'm worried that my latest Salvation Army donation will result in homeless people looking like sluts from the 90s.

Well I have never seen one of my sims comforting another one, and I have never seen it appear on their pie menu. I think it was a Sims 1 interaction, I used to see it a lot then.

I think they are using hacks to do it. If you have one sim crying and use the hack to make the other sim cheer the first sim up, that should do it.

There is a "Consolable Cry" animation/interaction accessible through boolProp TestingCheatsEnabled, which may well have something to do with it.

What I lack in decorum, I make up for with an absence of tact.

No its possible without hacks or boolprop, a sim needs to have really low motives in order for an other sim to cheer them up...

I'm new to The Sims 2, and I'm still feeling my way around - the other day the child my Sims had was in a foul mood, and there was a "console" option on a pie - I forget if it was him, or the adult, but he got a hug anyways :-)

The comfort option is under 'Appreciate'.
