All I can say to this fellow and his 'manifest', "Better a man think you a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt". The man is a "lawyah" - he gets paid by special interest groups regardless of whether his assertions carry any merit. Just remember: Osama has a crusade too

Western society (of which I am a part), in general, has a hard time differentiating between nudity/human physiology and sexuality. Naked IS sexual in this culture. I mean someone gets sight of a nipple and the whole Western world is up in arms. Over a nipple! Holy Lord.

Apparently, to this attorney at least, human physiology isn't even a factor. I'm certain if Maxis rendered sims as a naked cube, he'd still take up the charge. Why? Because he's paid to. I can't wait to see what's in store for Mattel. Barbie gets an M+ *snort*. I mean, after all, a pedophile could play out his fantasy on a doll just as (if not more) easily than a computer game?

Yes, I sorta said that. I do concur!
I think you said it better though, lol. It's true.. We're the responsible parents, not EA. They rate it, we make the ultimate decisions for our kids..
It's our job.. The perverts who have those types of issues would, I also think, rather go elsewhere (unfortunately, actually) where it is REAL. They are no different than anyone else when it comes to wanting something realistic. They are just different with their mental aspect of the subject (human anatomy), I would think. I am an adult and I prefer nudity in my game, realistic nudity but not to gawk, but to see it as it is and not so comical all the time. It would be worth waiting for I would think, if you are not an adult. Nothing wrong with waiting I waited, lol, and I was of an adult age.. I was just not in a rush but still prefer it realistic.

At this point, there hasn't been much that hasn't already been said. But I'll throw in my two cents anyway.
I had read the article in question just last night, and all I could do was shake my head. "Idiotic to the extreme" was the first thought to enter my mind. "Go choke on a floppy disk, Jack" was a close second.
Many of you have made the Barbie doll comparison. Admittedly, I made it myself as soon as I read this tripe. Not to be the devil's advocate, but Mattel has to deal with their own censorship issues a few years back. Remember the clamor about making Barbie's measurements less extreme? Hell, they even started painting on her underwear.:wtf2:
But honestly, I took it all in stride. Blah blah blah, right-wing nutcase, yada yada. Then I saw this little gem:
Quote:
Thompson this afternoon updated his earlier statement, saying he is aware certain mods only remove "the blur," but adds that "Electronic Arts has done nothing about this." Thompson's new conclusion: EA is "cooperating, gleefully, with the mod community to turn Sims 2 into a porn offering."

Uhhhh... we are talking about the same EA here, right Jack? Or am I just supposed to roll over and believe that the developers maliciously left in that one intProp command to destroy the youth of the world? Riiiiight.

To wrap this up: I try to not get involved with politics. I am a militant voter, but that's about the extent of this. But even I can see that gum-flapping ignoramuses like out beloved JT here won't sleep at night until all of America is transformed into a God-fearing, dogma-ingesting society where any action that doesn't fall in line with being A GOOD PATRIOTIC CITIZEN OF AMERICA--whether it be violence, sex, crime of any sort, or even THINKING about such things--is an automatic death sentence. (Do you see where I'm going with this?)

.:Please read my 2 cents cause' I got a wacko Idea!!:.

I know this may sound lame to you all, but I wrote some of the Maxoids, hoping they may somehow visit the site and see the PM!

I Gave them my full support letting them know the communtiy will ALWAYS have their back!

How do you think it feels to work on a game for 4 years, withstanding about 33 power outages...to get your game ridiculed by a poor, lost, idiot of a chap?

I don't want the Sims two go, I've been playing it for half a decade...I must say I've grown a bit attached.

BUT THE PEOPLE THE I FEEL THE MOST FOR IS THE MAXIODS & CORP

Like I said, they went with a full heart to make the game rated TEEN, so its sure the heck gonna stay that way. Its not there fault that some people like to make there game far more realistic than it came neat and packaged.

This Thompsom guy is well... :loser: :screwy:

I gots an Idea lets all email a Maxoid...even if you send an email from the TS2 site....^_^

Well its a crazy idea..but when the game you created gets attacked...I'm sure it makes you feel good to get some assurence from loyal fans...or mabye obsessive fans...

All I really read in these post are "I will be so ticked if they take the sims from me!!!"

I feel that too, but, as I've said 8 billion times in this post by now....MAXIODS!!!!

Heh, I didn't get what it meant either at first but I believe it's the name of the 'sex scene' or whatever could be unlocked (as it was unused in the game, but the coding was still present) in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

That's basically just a diversion. He's not interested in the content of a game, only in games and companies that are making money. Like a bunch of people have pointed out, he's going after The Sims 2 and not the Singles games when Singles has far worse content in it than Sims 2 does. He's not going after the GTA clones which try to push the violence and crime barrier higher than GTA, either. They didn't sell millions of copies.

Well you see I'm christian.I Read the bible, I go to church. But I strongly disagree with his ideas. I may be against Manhunt and GTA, but the Sims2? insanity. While I prefer the "blur' its not like Ive been to protected to know whats under there if it was "real life"

Sure on the game its ken and barbie...but what 13 year old doesn't really know in todays society, right?

So his statement of going to church and reading the bible is waaaay off. I do that, and I really don't see the issue with the Sims. I find it not very sinful except mabye public whoohoo, but do you actually think ateens gonna go

Ah GameFAQs/Gamespot forums. This whole Jack Thompson thing has pushed The Sims 2 boards into the top 10.
By the way, I'm Canadian Dude 2000 in that post.

If you look through both The Sims and the GTA boards, you'll find other emails and replies. I think he does have an auto-reply system.

Examples:

Posted my GameFAQs' user "Holy"
I wrote,
"Hello Jack,

It has come to my intention that you are a mindless idiot that will
not answer peoples questions reguarding Video Game Violence.

I've got a question for you, if videogamers are so violent, why is it
you are not dead?"

He replied,
"go to church and read the Bible"

I replied,
"Well Jack, I am a Christian, and I stopped going to Church long ago
because they said that everyone in the world is a sinner and is going
to hell.

May I suggest you check yourself into a mental institution?"

I haven't got a reply yet, it will be funny^_^

I found a link to your site, www.stopkill.com, through an online forum. I looked over it, and although I think that there is some genuine concern over the effect of violent media on kids, many of your statements on that site were made in ignorance. What I plan to do in this email is to help you gain a better understanding of video games, and to show you that while your intentions are good, your current course of action is a mistake. I'm going to present my arguments calmly and logically, and you're welcome to write a rebuttal if you wish. First off, let me tell you a little about myself. I'm 14, and I've been playing video games avidly since I was 8. I'm pretty knowledgeable about the subject of video games as a whole, and I've played my fair share of Halo 2 and other shooters, including the Ghost Recon series, which is regarded as one of the most realistic FPSs (first-person shooters, in case you aren't familiar with the terminology). I also enjoy strategy games, in which the death toll is often far higher than what you'd encounter in a FPS. I'm an archer, a martial artist (Tae Kwon Do), and I was taught how to operate a gun by my grandfather, who's an experienced hunter. And, oddly enough, I've never felt the urge to kill, or even seriously injure, anyone. I imagine that killing in self-defence would be extremely difficult for me, despite my alleged desensitization. Now I'd like to dismiss a misonception (I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and not assuming that you're twisting the truth) you have about games like Halo, which are called FPSs. These are not "sniper games." They are games presented in first person, in which you shoot enemies, manage ammunition, and explore levels. You may fail to see the distinction between "sniper" and "first person" based on that description alone, but if you ever take the time to play any of these games, you'll understand that there is no comparison between playing a FPS and operating a rifle. Which brings me to my next point- games can't accurately "train" you to commit violent acts, despite your claims. First off, games are innacurate by their very nature, and they give you less practical knowledge on operating firearms than watching a few hours of History Channel would. Secondly, I'm going to walk you through a typical scenario of me playing Halo 2, which is probably the best FPS available right now1) I rotate the right control stick slightly, then hold down the right trigger. There is no violent intent towards my enemy, wether it's an AI-controlled bot or a human opponent I'm facing online- it's a simple challenge in the case of the former and a friendly competition in the case of the latter.(2) On screen, a series of polygons which emulate bullet trails appear. Those polygons collide with the polygons rendered to represent my enemy, and those same polygons then emulate my opponent dying. The important distinction here is that there is no gun, no bullets, and no enemy. There is a rotation of the control stick and a pull of the controller's trigger, resulting in a change of the onscreen display. Anyone who can't see the difference between this and the act of firing a gun at a human being is clearly unfit to be playing these games and, frankly, is an idiot. Which, once again, leads me to the next point I'm going to make. No one in their right mind would ever do the things that you blame on video games. A quick glance at such actions shows that there are far bigger, far more serious causes than violent media behind them. Now, you may wonder, "Why would someone kill a person in a video game if they think it's wrong to do in real life?" Well, the truth is, no one gets hurt when you kill a video game character. There are corporeal consequences to commiting acts of violence on real living things, but the difference is that real living things are just that, real. Well, that's my case against your Anti-Violent Games crusade. I support efforts to get parents more informed about the type of games their kids are playing, but it doesn't take some kind of genius to look at the back of the box of the game your kid wants to buy. If that doesn't tell you enough, there are many popular, respected websites that can give parents reliable information on the content of games. There is no evil conspiracy to turn America's youth into killers going on here- developers are people too. It should be noted that any federal interference with the video game industry would go down in my book as a violation of freedom of speech, which is something I dissaprove of under all circumstances. PS: On the topic of the 'Hot Coffee' mod for GTA: San Andreas, I get the feeling that you don't know what a mod is. Mods are code written by third parties, which adds to or modifies the game code, thereby adding or changing gameplay features. Also, you should keep in mind that this game is rated Mature(17+), and it's clearly displayed on the box that GTA contains sexual content, so any parent who walks in on their kid playing Hot Coffee shouldn't be at all shocked, in my humble opinion.

Jack Thompson wrote:
Of course they can train you to kill. The games suppress the inhibition to kill, which is why the military uses them for that purpose. Thanks for writing.

I wrote:
That's a half-truth. The games used by the military are not the same as the games available to the public, and they're far more akin to simulators than to entertainment systems. There is only one game that I know of which was used by the military and is now available to the public, Full Spectrum Warrior, and the civilian version was modified for faster gameplay and improved graphics. Things such as making the grenades go off quicker, for example, to give it more pick-up-and-play, entertainment value. Even then, anyone can tell you that killing in a game is not at all comparable to killing in reality, because killing in a game is, in fact, not actually killing.Flight simulators aren't used to suppress the inhibition to fly, they're used to give the pilot-in-training technical skills needed to operate a plane. The military uses video games in the same way.

Well, I'll admit defeat on Hot Coffee issue, but my point about violence still stands. I'd hardly call that article an effective rebuttal to my statements. And just for the sake of debate, let's hypothetically say your theory is true, and violent games do indeed reduce the inhibition to kill. Does that neccessarily mean that a gamer would have any more desire to kill? It would simply remove a roadblock for someone who already has violent urges and tendencies, caused by other, more serious factors, would it not? A rational, peaceable person who's inhibition to kill was reduced still would lack the violent urge to even contemplate murder.

I think we need to get together and battle against this guy as a community, does anyone have any ideas? I was thinking about maybe getting a domain, similar to tomcruiseisnuts.com concept. But then I thought, hmm this guy is a Lawyer! Does anyone work for a high profile newspaper or TV station?

Edit: speaking of tomcruiseisnuts.com look at their latest site LOL http://www.karlroveistoast.com/

ooh and another thing, I am originally from the UK I've lived in the USA for a couple of years now and yes we have a game rating system but there are certain places that wont even check your ID. And/or certain kids are able to convince their parents to buy these games for them.
