Do you remember the last thing you downloaded?
There is probably a corrupted file in your The Sims 2 folder in C:\ My Documents \ EA Games \ The Sims 2. Drag the folder to your desktop and then run the game again. The game will create a new The Sims 2 folder if it doesn't give you the error message again. If that is okay, then you can start bringing back your folders (from The Sims 2 folder that you dragged to your desktop). Drag each folder inside The Sims 2 folder one-by-one. Hopefully your game will start up normally this time.
You should only be concerned with Neighborhoods, SavedSims, Downloads, and Collections.
