Computer Specs: 4GB vs 3GB GPU? i7 4930k vs i7 4770k/4790k?
Hello Simmers,

I need my techy Simmers help on a custom build. I am a Multimedia Coordinator and spend most of my time in Adobe CS6, Maya, Lightwave, Visual Studio, and Sony Platinum Studio. Outside of work I am always on The Sims 2-3 and soon to be 4 and various other games and doing lots of video editing for my personal youtube channel and animation channel.

I am stuck between which CPU to purchase:
1. i7 4930k
2. i7 4790k
3. i7 4770k

I def want to spend less than $3,000. Hopefully less than $2,000 if I'm lucky.
This is the tower I'm purchasing: Thermaltake Level 10GT

I need to know which processor would most benefit my production and gaming needs as well as my wallet (don't want to upgrade anything for a while).

Also video card advice. Is a 4GB video card with 512bit better? I've been leaning more toward Nvidia brand in the past. I hear a lot of debate between the:
Radeon R9 290X http://www.microcenter.com/product/...R9290XDC2OC4GD5

GeForce GTX 780 Ti http://www.microcenter.com/product/...-2884-KR_NVIDIA

+Cards+-+Top+2+

GeForce GTX 760 http://www.microcenter.com/product/...0_4GB_PCI-e_GDD

Or could I get something equivalent for less money?

I'll be running The Sims on either a 280/500GB Samsung SSD. With 32GB RAM Win 7

The rest of the computer will be a random 4TB HDD (My current PC has 3TB and will be given away)

So what do you think I should choose and why? Is it worth buying the 2011 socket or the 1150? Which will be better upgradable in the future? Which will keep me stable for the next 5+ year? Once I know these two key components I'll have a better idea of which motherboard etc. Thank you!

Will be playing on 23" led monitor for now, might upgrade to a 27" in future or dual 23"

The 4930k has more core/threads and is ~500mhz faster per core than the 4790k but it is also approx $240 more expensive. LGA 2011 motherboards also tend to be more expensive than LGA 1150.

No point in getting i7 4770k instead of 4790k unless it's significantly cheaper.

If you can write off the cost of the PC as an expense for your tax purposes, or if the company employing you is paying for the PC, then I would say go for the 4930k. If you're paying out of your own pocket without the option of reducing your tax liability then I would say go for the 4790k. $580 for the 4930k is a lot of money.

Regardless of what processor you buy, expect it to remain relevant for only 4-5 years. Technology advances so fast that I'm pretty sure that by then Intel will invent something that will blow current CPUs out of the water. To give you an idea, the best consumer grade i7 from 5 years ago was a first gen i7 970. The 4770 is about 70% faster.

For the graphics card it depends on price. You should visit the forums for the individual programs you plan on using and check which cards they recommend. Some programs will run much faster on AMD cards than they do on Nvidia cards depending on the technology they leverage. If more programs benefit from AMD, then go with the R9 290X, if more benefit from Nvidia, then go for the 780 Ti.

Don't get a random HDD, get only Western Digital.

Get an IPS screen if you can.
