I'll begin with an apology, because this has probably been asked before, but there is so much here........

I'd like to begin object creation. My background (amateur, but good) is flat graphics. I can use GIMP in my sleep. But I'd love to create the 3D objects.

Reading this forum I see most queries on Milkshape, Is that because it's more popular (more used) or because it's harder to use?

What I'm really asking - I think - is where do I start, and which is the better - Milkshape or Blender.

Apologizing again because I have a feeling I need to.

What do you want to create? Objects/clothes/something else? Personally, I prefer a combination of using Milkshape and Blender, but my experience is with TS2 meshing. For TS3 objects, cmo's Blender tools are essential (IMO) to create a good multiplier. For TS3 clothes, Milkshape is more useful because of the tools/plugins using Milkshape. So it all comes back to the first question, what do you want to do Using both programs probably does give you the best of both worlds though.
There's a tutorial for clothes here, using Milkshape: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=397260
A tutorial for editing painting images, good to have an idea of what textures a TS3 object uses, but it doesn't get into meshing yet: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=392299
'Basic' object tutorial using Blender: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=455980
Good luck!
