Default Terrain Paint .Package Files into .dds?
I found a bunch of awesome terrain paints that would go perfect in my world, but they're all in .package form. Is there a way to convert them into .dds files or to otherwise enable them in CAW?

You can extract the IMG resources from the packages, the dds's, and put those to your CAW source textures folder. To use them on an upload, make sure that you have the creators approval, if the paints were not originally made for CAW use, for your personal use there is no reason why you could not do this.

I know this is an old thread but I'm hoping someone is paying attention. I'd really appreciate a more thorough answer to the original question.

Exactly HOW does one extract the IMG resources from a package file?

You have to use S3PE to do that. You can find a lot about it at the top of the forum page. It's a program.

The autolink looks right.

Okay, I've got the program but have no clue what I'm doing with it. It's certainly not intuitively designed is it. Is there a tutorial about how to convert packages to dds files somewhere?

I want to get decorative (they do not need to function) train tracks into CAW. I found this and downloaded it, https://www.thesimsresource.com/dow...%29/id/1117495/
But it's not a package file? S3PE won't open it.

That's a Sims3Pack, so you need to extract the package from that.

Also, that train track is described as 'fence' so may not be usable in CAW.

This list might be useful, it's listed on the top of the main caw forum as well: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=463191

obs I just realized you need S3OC to convert the package to something S3PE can use, then you open the file in S3PE and on the img file right click on the right side of the img inside the package and choose export or something. Orangemittens made a tutorial for object creation here: http://www.simlogical.com/

You should be able to get S3OC there as well. Read the start of the tutorial to get a grip on the program.

... and yes, that traintrack is a fence. You probably have to make a lot for it.

Well it seemed to me that the easiest way would be to have a road terrain but make it unroutable and so used only for decoration, but I can't find anyone who has made a 'train track' road. I thought I had found a couple of files, but when I went to try and put them into S3PE it informed they were the wrong file types and it turned out they were both from The Sims 2, so I couldn't use them. That's when I found that other one which is apparently a fence, so I can't use that in CAW unless it's on lots, which won't work for what I want to do. Augh!

I also don't have the World Adventures expansion which from my reading appears to be needed for any kind of functional train tracks; do people just not bother making decorative train tracks or what?

The complications of this game and all the custom stuff bug me sometimes. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that all the customization is even possible, but super complicated and frustrating at times.

I may be wrong but I don't believe that you have to have World Adventures to use these decorative train tracks: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=418719. I think that they are from Twinbrook. I use them as decorative train tracks all the time. They can be a bit tricky to work with but it is possible to get them perfectly aligned in CAW. They can even be run across roads and cars will go right over them without any problem. If I read it correctly, there may be a railroad train track texture in this download: http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/dis...wnloadable-pack. I opened the download but did not see anything that obviously looked to be tracks. If so, you may want to contact the original poster, STW402, about the texture. Good luck with your project!

Yes, those came with Ambitions- I used them in one of my worlds and they can be used across roads:

The track shown in SimmyRN's post above is from World Adventures, and is used in France. The train that traverses the track is an effect and cannot be interacted with. The rails from Ambitions as you can see from my images are more like an abandoned railway, and the ramshackle station and carriages are just decor and not useable. There's no locomotive with that. The Future EP has a sci-fi style monorail:

Details about getting that working in CAW here:

That one actually transports sims, if that's what you're after.

Oh good- do you have Ambitions (your profile says you do)? If so get GiLang's mod to get them into CAW from the link in @SimmyRN 's post. You can get the ruined station here:
http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=427515
The trailers, if I recall, are already selectable in CAW (someone correct me plz if I'm wrong!).

Yes I have Ambitions. I have the boxcar available and the train bridge, but no tracks. So I'll try to figure out how to get them into CAW. I already amended that file in the CAW folder so I just need to find the train tracks file and get it put into the CAW packages folder.. is that right?

That other thread/tutorial is a bit hard to understand, but it's mostly because I got confused about the edit in game function and was thinking I had to actually start the game, haha. But I got it working finally. Yay!

Thanks so much guys!

I'm so glad you got them working! I'm sorry that I wasn't very clear. The first link in my post was for the decorative train tracks from Twinbrook/Ambitions of which simsample attached pictures. I have the train as a decorative object in CAW but I don't know what EP or neighborhood it is from. In my CAW it is called "Antique Train". (Picture below.) The picture I attached to my previous post was, I thought, a terrain paint with railroad tracks. I didn't realize it was a decorative object from France. Is anyone aware of a train track terrain paint? (I looked at the textures in STW402's download and none were train tracks.) I think that would be an awesome texture!

No worries. I'm going for an abandoned train line so want the dilapidated run down look like the other tracks and train car off the tracks that comes with Ambitions. I'll post a screenshot (though I haven't started the terrain paint yet so it looks a bit weird at the moment.)

Very nice! I like it! You might want to bring a track from the abandoned mine out to join the main track. If you have the train tunnel, it might be neat to put it in the side of the hill in the first picture where the abandoned train car is. I did something similar by putting rocks in front / around the tunnel as if it were closed off by a rock slide. It looks like you've made a great start!

I think I will bring the track out from the mine, thanks for that! And thanks for the compliments!
I don't have the train tunnel, and I probably would have placed it if I had it, but I won't bother hunting it down to place it now. I'm happy with the main track part now. I'm not sure about the one building (logging one) with the reddish colouring, but I'm going to leave it till after I have the terrain paint and other decorative stuff done as that might change my opinion.
