I may be remembering wrong, but I thought there was a mod that made it so things attached to the ceiling disappeared when you had the walls down. I know simlogical has one that hides ceilings lights...

I've checked now and it turned out he was a kid from the bin that I'd forgotten about! Mystery solved. I have the clean and empty templates so I knew he wasn't one of the usual townies.
