Memes have a rich, deep history and today I will basically just regurgitate a Wikipedia article I found.
Memes originated in 1976 when Richard Dawkins published the book "The Selfish Gene." In this book he coined the term meme. Dawkins "contended that the meme is a unit of information residing in the brain and is the mutating replicator in human cultural evolution," as Wikipedia says. In layman's terms, a meme is a cultural phenomenon where something is passed from person to person.
The study of memes, or 'memetics' is based on Darwinian evolution. As, Frank Jav Cee, renowned memelogist, put it, "To meme is to evolve."
