View Full Version : Upgrades needed - new MTS donation drive! - Update: Closed!

Hi All,

Update #3

I've decided to stop the donation drive as donations slowed to a trickle. The final amount raised was $5,395 - just short of the stretch goal! Thank you to everybody who donated!

Whats going to happen now? Well, I can prepay the new server for 9 months, then use the rest for extra months - but now we have a good basis for the next year on new hardware, with your help. I'll update a new thread on more detailed migration plans, estimated dowtime etc. Again, a HUGE thanks to all who donated!

Update #2

Primary goal reached! We did it in just over 2 days - you all are great! I'm going to turn on the stretch goal, so we'll see how far it goes. :)

Update

It looks like we might hit the goal sometime tonight - you guys are great! If we do then I'll turn on the stretch goal :) Thank you to all who donated!

The message...

As everybody knows, MTS is one of the largest and busiest Sims 2 and 3 fansites around, offering many thousands of high quality downloads, creation help, game discussion and more! Running a site this large takes a lot of stuff on the back end: 1 primary server, a backup server, and a metric boatload of bandwidth. Long term members of the site will recall that, occasionally, we do a donation drive just to make sure that we are covered in the event of any hardware or server problems, and in case of any other unexpected costs. Just as a side note - we last ran a donation drive in 2009 (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=371762)!

This time, however, the primary goal for this donation drive is to upgrade the current primary server that MTS is hosted on. We are currently hosted on a dedicated server which is a 2.4ghz Nehalem Quad-Core E5620, running CentOS 5.7 with 24gb ram with an 80gb Intel 320 SSD, 1TB of SAS storage, and about 33TB of bandwidth a month. This server is now just over a year old and 2 generations old, and it's now time to upgrade.

We'll be moving to a 3.5ghz Ivy Bridge Quad-Core HT processor, running CentOS 6 with 32gb ram, dual 120gb Intel 520 SSDs in RAID 1, 1TB of SAS storage and dropping down to 20TB bandwith a month (on a 100mbit NIC). The primary advantage in this server is twofold - firstly, the better CPU architecture (vs the old one) and higher clock speed - coupled with the linux kernel improvements and upgrading to PHP5.4 - will hopefully speed up the PHP side of things, and, secondly, the dual SSDs in RAID 1 will hopefully massively increase the speed of the databases. Given that the new SSDs are 50% larger than the current ones, I can put more MySQL databases on those SSDs which can help to speed things up like the wiki.

The new server is actually slightly cheaper due to moving from a dual CPU configuration to a single one - I've been measuring the CPU performance of Maia (the primary server) and she usually runs at around 30% cpu load - most of which is used by mySQL, so I think we can drop from 16 cores to 8 running at a higher speed on a better architecture without losing any speed.

I'd like to try to rent the server for 6 months, but ideally for a year in advance (since you get more free months the more you buy). To that end I'm going to do a sort of Kickstarter - there is a primary goal (at the 6 months mark), but also a stretch goal, at the 12 months mark. If we meet the primary but not the secondary, I can use whatever is in between to purchase 3 month blocks instead.

Primary goal: $2,934
Stretch goal: $5,868

http://db.modthesims.info/donategraph.php

The graph at the top of the page will update in real time to reflect the number of donations, so you see how close we are to our goal. Note that people who have already donated won't see the banner message after the first 24 hours - during the first day though it'd shown to all.

Every person who donates will get a little supporter heart on thier user profile, and you can read more about the donation benefits here: http://www.modthesims.info/donate.php

Please try and give a little - even if it's not much! Every little bit helps, especially for a site this large.

Just as a couple side notes:
- If you do not have a Paypal account: You can still donate using a credit card through Paypal without linking your credit card or bank account to Paypal. It's quick and easy whether you currently use Paypal or not.
- If you prefer not to use Paypal whatsoever: If you prefer to contribute in another way, you can purchase items through our Amazon Store Link - just follow that link before making Amazon purchases (even if they're nothing sim related) to help out the site. It's a less direct way and gives a much smaller amount, but if you were already planning on placing an Amazon order, you can help us while buying books.

MTS is and always will be free to use - while donation can come with some minor perks, we're dedicated to keeping the site running smoothly for everyone. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has donated in the past, and also everybody who is willing to donate in this current drive. Your help is very much appreciated!

(If you donated and didn't get your heart please let me know in this thread or via PM - thanks!)

Regards,
Delphy

Wow, I do not understand the second, third and fourth paragraphs of that! :P But I will try to scrape up some money this time around! Thanks for keeping the tech up-to-date, D!

Edit: Money's tight, but I just got paid by one of my dog-walking clients. $5.20 of my paycheck (Canadian dollars, which stink right now unfortunately) is now gone to supporting the site I love so much!

Bam. I kept trying to work it into my budget but the conversion rate was so confusing. Gave circa US$8, not much, but heck I use the site like a maniac. Incidentally, thank you for providing a credit card option. Paypal has never cooperated with me, and last I investigated donating that was the only apparent option.

I'm curious as to the yearly income generated from the ads hosted on this forum. Also what are and how much are the yearly expenses to maintain MTS?

Are the revenues received from ad payments and forum expenditures kept in a separate MTS only account?

Just curious since this thread is about money.

I donated $15 :-) This site is wonderful, my days just wouldn't be the same without it! Seeing this donation drive stuff also reminded me that I'd cancelled my subscription a while back due to money worries and it was about time I subscribed again :-) So now I'm an Addict - which is completely true! :-D I see my icons are still being weird though....

Just curious since this thread is about money.

The ads currently bring in between 600-800 USD a month depending on traffic. Currently, the expenses per month stand at $860 ($608 for the primary server + $72 for backup server + $100 for other offsite services and the CDN + $80 for an older DNS server thats being decommisioned soon). Ad revenue has actually dropped over time since the number of pageviews has decreased over the years to the point where we dont have a big pool anymore, hence the donation drive. Yearly expenses would also have to factor in domain renewals (which probably add another $150 or so). I'm sure there is some things I'm missing. :)

All MTS payments come from either Paypal directly (when the service supports it like GoDaddy), or, in most cases, like the hosting company, from a credit card that I only use for MTS.

So currently the forum is running a $60-$260 deficit each and every month. Possibly more due to expenses you may have missed.

Based on these figures, the site cannot be maintained. Are there any concrete plans to offset the deficits to create a balance or, more desirable, a surplus? If not, MTS is doomed and any purchase for improvements would be a worthless endeavor.

Regardless, next paycheck I will make a donation. Not much as I only work part-time and, as I am certain you are aware, the economy is troubling.

I appreciate your response, thank you. I simply don't understand how MTS can continue facing a possible near $3000.00/year deficit. A deficit which can further grow should ad revenues further decline.

Thank you again for your response.

I'm, by no means, Delphy and can't say for sure but the revenue from the ads was listed as $600-860 a month. People can donate all through the year and, as shown above, some people set up monthly subscriptions. I wouldn't say MTS is doomed.

The amount of generosity in this community does not fail to amaze me. There are a ton of people donating $50 and $100. However, there are plenty more just donating a couple dollars, whatever they can. I see some of you are college students, some still in high school, some of you older members with families of your own to support. Seeing how much you love this site and are willing to contribute to keep it going makes my heart all warm and fuzzy.

So thank you, each and every one of you for whatever you can afford to share and for making this site my home-on-the-internet home.

Psst. I donated yesterday and haven't gotten my little heart yet. Not sure when it kicks in though.

We also get some from the wiki ads and monthly subscribers too, which covers that deficit. :)

The newer server is approximately $120 less per month than the current one, plus the old DNS server (which costs $80) will be decommisioned. Additionally, some of the offsite service contracts are due for renewal in September, which I wont be renewing, saving another $100.

So, the newer costs (later this year) would be:

$489 - primary server
$72 - backup + DNS server
$20 - CDN
------
$581 per month

This is, I think, sustainable in the much longer term - especially since I've also been working on backend improvements to increase the loading speed of pages, which in turn means more pageviews, which in turn means better ad revenue. In turn, speeding up the wiki also means more pageviews there, hence more ad revenues from that.

In any event, even if the site does run a deficit for a month, I'll cover it personally (as I have done in the past). But I am well aware of how expensive a site like this can be, which is also why I would like to pre-pay as much as possible so that we can take advantage of free months. :)

I'll have to see how much money's I can dig up. Currently unemployed and working on just my husband's income. I did, however, disable my adblocker on this domain. I didn't realize it was still running on here. You guys should look into doing something similar to how wowhead does and remind people to whitelist your page.

Lemme see how many pennies I can scrape together to donate. I'll be trying to find that Amazon Store link as well, since I keep a giftcard balance active in my amazon account. Do ya'll still get moneys if I use a giftcard balance on an amazon purchase?

Given that monthly cost was listed as $860., an ad income of $600. would indicate a monthly deficit of $260./month. An ad income of $800./month indicates a deficit of $60./month.

Since no other monthly revenue was listed (such as subscribers, year long donations or other sources of revenue) and basing my figures on strictly what was provided. My appraisal was sound.

@ >> DittanyPark >> Doomed is not an options for the Sims members or staff that word is negative we here at MTS have always been "Positive Optimistic, Confident."

Where there is a will there is a way, I think that is our motto, and if we all pull together and donate no matter how big or small then it become "We Can. "

Very good point if one takes that prospective. I appreciate you pointing this out.

Prompted by your stance, how about full disclosure to show "overall revenue"?

What exactly are the monthly revenues broken down by sources?

What are the profit/loss statement tallies for each month of the past twelve?

This will allow a complete appraisal which you have found me lacking.

MTS isn't a business, DP.

Tashiketh
2nd Jul 2012, 6:07 PM
This isn't a business, so I don't have profit & loss statements :) Suffice to say that ad revenue on MTS is by far the largest portion of income, and, as I mentioned, the other sources like subscriptions and the occasional paypal donation make up the rest, plus ads on the wiki. What has happened in the past is that any ad revenue made above the costs has basically been put on hold until such time it's needed - this is, incidentally, why we haven't had to run a donation drive for 3 years - simply put; any surplus goes towards the site and only the site.

Let's not get into discussions about who said what about what to who. :) This site is most certainly not doomed - at least not while I am running it. :) We've gone through periods of great and not so great growth, and I loathe to do donation drives. But, sometimes, they a neccessary, especially when there is an ambitious goal in mind. I have the long term goals of the site in mind and have planned some great new features to come (fairly) soon, and I'm eagerly awaiting when I can reveal those to everybody. Let's concentrate on the content and the atmosphere of the site and the the people on it - together we make this fansite one of the best in the community and I just want to thank everybody who donates - big and small - for your contribution. It's very much appreciated!

I am aware that MTS isn't a "business". A person's home isn't an actual business either, yet it is practical and wise to run it as such. Allows knowledge of what are the comings and goings, income/expenses, for better financial management.

I get it. There isn't a desire to share specific revenue information.

charchar - No worries, I will explain what the donation drive is for via interpretive dance, since you don't want to read. Here goes:

I enjoyed that! Do you give dance classes at all? Maybe we could have an online interactive dance class? I am sure people would be happy to give a little extra for that feature ;)

wat does the donation go 2

HystericalParoxysm
3rd Jul 2012, 12:59 PM
charchar - As the first post states, donations go toward server and hosting costs. We're looking to get some new server hardware, and to prepay for server costs as it's cheaper that way.

This is a bit paradoxical, surely charchar had to do some reading to read HP's reply?

I just donated. My reason for donating, is for the TSM players being given a home on a portion of the site. Thank you, it's been much appreciated =)

Was the goal reached? Noticed the graph is no longer at the top of the pages.

3rd Jul 2012, 9:41 PM
The graph at the top of the page will update in real time to reflect the number of donations, so you see how close we are to our goal. Note that people who have already donated won't see the banner message after the first 24 hours - during the first day though it'd shown to all.

Graph is still in the first post. Just isn't in the banner if you got your heart. We're almost there though! :)

Congratulations Delphy =D
I love this site for 3 years and this site is trusted....

Wow, I can't believe how fast the donations are building up! It's almost completely full in about 2 days!!! Proves how many people (including myself) truly love this site. Of course, even those who can't donate love the site just as much, but......you get what I mean. :P

We're all awesome.

Oh, and I added a :duck: to make it that much more awesome. :D

Can't really afford to donate much, but a little is better than nothing I reasoned so at least I contributed something. :) Don't see a heart though, despite it being 2 days ago. I'll have to check the transaction ID on PayPal and pm that and amount to Delphy, right? Not sure if it's related, but I did notice after the payment went through that it failed to send me back to MTS afterwards (got an error message about it). I hope it's just a matter of lacking the icon and that the donation itself ended up where it was supposed to (it did show up alright on PP).

I was dumb enough to donate one time, using a different mail then I have on this site. So, I donated a second time using the same as here. Crossing my fingers for getting my heart this time around.
Since I already admitted to being dumb; the first donation gets through right? Even if it's technically given by a mail adresse that doesn't belong here?

I really really want to donate, but PayPal won't let me have my money from selling my TS3 games on Ebay for a few more days yet, and the drive is probably going to be over by then. :/

Inge Jones

You can donate any time. There is always a donate button. It's just from time to time a special fund raising campaign is needed, like this.

Nysha
4th Jul 2012, 9:30 PM
urunwa, we don't use the email address to identify donators, it just relies on you being logged in here when you make the donation. So thankyou for your two donations. ;)

Xiove, yes, sent the transaction ID and amount to Delphy. He'll check that it went through, and if not you can contact PayPal and get your money back. :)

I haven't got a paycheck in about 8 months now  But I've been part of MTS for years and years, so I'm more than happy to give back to my favorite community :)

Now if I only had a heart..

/me shakes fist a PayPal. They still haven't sent me my transfer confirmation email yet, and I can't get the money into my account until then. But anywho, YAY! The goal has been reached! And I know it'll make the stretch goal as well! Does this mean we get to throw a wild ass party and hire some "Chip 'n' Dale" dancers to entertain us all? :heyhey:

Sadly, my randomly-processing brain immediately thought of the Disney chipmunks when I saw this, even though I know who 'Chip n' Dale" dancers really are. Bad image, folks. Bad, BAD image. (of the Disney chipmunks in that situation, I mean...erm.) :faceslap:

But I SURE DO HOPE SO for the actual dancers and all. We'd have our own "Magic Mike" movie on our hands!

Again, so glad to see how fast the goal was reached. You know it means something when people in this economy are eagerly willing and hurrying to throw money to a Sims CC website. :anime:

Here's hoping the community continues to support MTS so we can all enjoy sim goodness for many more years to come. Thanks Delphy, HP, all the mods and staff, for years and years of fun! And creators, you rock!

Delphy
So with this beefier hardware, will the site be able to handle searches in create forums? Last time I checked (long, long ago), those had been disabled because they overtaxed the system. Or was that a software issue, not hardware?

Just made a small donation... how could I not? The generosity of this community is astounding, and truly encouraging. I'm here every single day, and present in chat (if nowhere else) every single day too. I've met some terrific people here, and would hate to lose that connection because the site had to close for lack of funds! (I know that's not the case, I'm just saying...)

Thank you to all of you who put in a contribution, big or small. We stand together here, clearly!

I donated twice because I wasn't logged in the first time. Ooops. No matter - even though I don't post a lot, this site has helped so much I couldn't not give something. I wish I was able to give more. I did take the AdBlock off the site - I didn't even know I could do that, but I've done that now as well. :) Just wanted to pop in and say thank you.
